The Hardest Flags Quiz.

Anyone can name Japan, Canada and Brazil. The real test is the flags that hide behind a single shade of blue, or belong to a country of eleven thousand people in the middle of the Pacific.

Here's the hard end of the world's flags, sorted into three difficulty levels — and the technique that makes them stick.

    Last reviewed: October 2026

    Level 1 — the near-twins

Chad vs Romania. Indonesia vs Monaco. Ireland vs Côte d'Ivoire. Mali vs Guinea. These are decided by shade and proportion alone, and they catch out almost everyone on their first run.

Level 2 — the shared palettes

Central America's blue-white-blue family (Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Argentina) and the Pan-Arab set (Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Jordan, Kuwait, Palestine). Same colours, different details.

    Level 3 — the rarely-seen

Comoros, Kiribati, Nauru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Turkmenistan, Bhutan, Eswatini. Distinctive designs, but you'll only recognise them if you've actually met them before — which is exactly what practice fixes.

    How to actually beat them

Short quizzes beat cramming. Learn look-alikes as pairs, not singles, work continent by continent from the full flag index, and revisit your misses on a schedule. FlagMaster does all three automatically.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the hardest flag to guess?

Chad's flag is the single hardest, because it is virtually identical to Romania's apart from a slightly darker blue. Close behind come Indonesia vs Monaco and the small Pacific and Caribbean nations most people rarely see.

Which flags do most people get wrong?

The Nordic crosses, the Central American tricolours (Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala all share blue-white-blue), and the small island states of Oceania and the Caribbean.

How do you win a hard flag quiz?

Learn look-alikes in pairs, learn by continent rather than alphabetically, and use short, frequent quizzes instead of long study sessions. FlagMaster's spaced repetition brings back the flags you got wrong exactly when you're about to forget them.
