What does the flag of Poland mean?

The colours are of heraldic origin and come from the tinctures (colours) of the coats of arms of the two constituent nations of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, namely the White Eagle of Poland and the Pursuer of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a white knight riding a white horse, both on a red shield.

Colours and what they stand for

    • White

Symbolises the White Eagle of Poland, and is also said to represent purity

    • Red

Symbolises the background of the coat of arms, and is also said to represent the blood shed for the country's independence

    History

The flag was officially adopted in 1919, one year after Poland regained its independence. The design has remained unchanged.
