What does the flag of Angola mean?
The red stripe represents the bloodshed during Angola's independence struggle, and the black stripe represents the African continent. The central emblem, a cogwheel and machete with a star, is said to be inspired by the hammer and sickle and represents industrial and agricultural workers.

History
Adopted in 1975, the flag is based on the flag of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). A new design was proposed in 2003 but was never adopted.
